This is the rare seeds of the superior round pod variety of Tabernanthe iboga, also known as Iboga. Tabernanthe iboga is a perennial rainforest shrub native to Central Africa, particularly found in Gabon, Cameroon, and the Republic of Congo. It’s notable for its cultural and medicinal significance, especially among the Bwiti religious tradition in Gabon, where it’s used in spiritual ceremonies.
The Iboga grows up to 2 metre in height but in ideal conditions, can form a 10 metre tree. It prefers well composted, well drained soils, in a protected partly shady position. It is drought and frost tender. The stem is erect and branching with dark green leaves. The flowers are white to yellowish and widely expanding tubular.
The primary psychoactive compound in iboga is ibogaine, which is also of interest for its potential therapeutic effects, particularly in treating addiction and depression. Ibogaine is found in the roots of the iboga plant. Research has explored ibogaine’s potential in treating substance use disorders due to its effects on opioid receptors and serotonin transporters.
